3GP Converter

On this Wired article there's a quick tutorial on how to convert DVDs into iPod compatible MP4 files, by using DVDFab Decrypter, VOBMerge, and 3GP Converter. Of particular interest is the 3GP Converter. I think I have read about this on the MP4 mailing list.

Mobile phone sales pass 800 million | CNET News.com

According to the latest number by iSuppli, even though the global shipments of cell phones last year surpassed 800 Million units, the top three vendors took away more than 60% of the total market (Nokia 32.6%, Motorola 18%, and Sumsung 12.7%). The total accessible market for us small fish is likely to be in the range of 10%. Which is still a lot, of course, but not nearly as impressive. See Mobile phone sales pass 800 million at CNet.

Video compression formats in HD-DVD and Blu-Ray

According to HD DVD - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "Both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray formats will be backwards compatible with DVDs and both employ the same video compression techniques: MPEG-2, Video Codec 1 (VC1, based on the Windows Media 9 format) and H.264/MPEG-4 AVC."

According to H.264/MPEG-4 AVC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "Apple added H.264 video playback to their 5th Generation iPod on October 12, 2005. The new product will use this format, as well as MPEG-4 Part 2, for video playback. The video-enabled iPod will use the H.264 Baseline Profile with support of bit rates up to 768 kbit/s, image resolutions up to 320 x 240, and frame rates up to 30 frames per second."

The GPAC Project on Advanced Content is an opensource project to provide a better alternative to the MPEG-4 Systems reference software. It supports many recent multimedia standards (such as 3GP, VRML...). May become useful to us in the future.
